Created in 1964 by André Malraux, the Inventaire Général du Patrimoine Culturel identifies, studies and publicizes France’s heritage. Since 2004, in partnership with the Pays de la Loire Region, the Pays du Perche Sarthois has been carrying out this mission on its territory.
Whether architectural or movable, urban or rural, civil or religious, industrial, domestic or public, the Inventory is an exhaustive survey of all the components of a landscape shaped by man. Field surveys and photographic campaigns, supplemented by research in archives and libraries and the gathering of oral testimonies, make it possible to establish homogeneous and durable documentation, accompanied by analyses and summaries.
A new inventory operation focusing on the subject of the “bourg en Perche Sarthois” was launched in 2017: development, functions, architecture, networks. Twelve towns were selected for in-depth study: Connerré, Valennes, Sceaux-sur-Huisne, Montfort-le-Gesnois, Conflans-sur-Anille, Tuffé Val de la Chéronne, Semur-en-Vallon, Coudrecieux, Bessé-sur-Braye, La Bosse, Torcé-en-Vallée, Saint-Calais.
The evolution of the structure of each of these towns is studied in detail, along with the key buildings that mark their evolution (church buildings, public establishments, industries, etc.) and a few examples of housing. The aim is to highlight the characteristics of the Perche Sarthois market town.
