These parishes grew up in the Middle Ages on soils that were often sandy or stony, making them unsuitable for agriculture before it was modernised. The villagers therefore supplemented their incomes with textile crafts and the extraction of materials. Sand, limestone and sandstone were used for building. Many of the buildings in Dollon still have yellow sandstone frames. Iron ore was also mined in Semur to supply the Cormorin forges in Champrond. Located away from the main communication routes, these villages have retained their dynamism despite the rural exodus that affected them with the end of rural industries and traditional activities. As a result, these communities have managed to maintain a vibrant community life, fostering the development of original events and venues such as the tourist train in Semur-en-Vallon and the museum of mechanical music in Dollon.
