SAINT-CALAIS, A SMALL TOWN FULL OF CHARACTER
It all began here in the 6th century, when Saint Karileph, a hermit from the Auvergne, settled here to build a Benedictine abbey. Jealous of the abbey's fortune, the Count of Maine decided to build a castle in the 11th century, of which all that remains today is the feudal motte. After the French Revolution, the abbey was dismantled, making way for a Haussmann-style town with regular streets built around the Gothic church and the banks of the Anille.
