The nickname coudrais, or coudrier, the ancient name for hazelnut trees, refers to the frequent presence of this shrub in the hedgerows of the commune, which has been located on the lower slopes of the Bonnétable plateau, along the Rosay valley, since at least the 11th century. 20 farms and 50 bordages were recorded in 1692, and 25 farms and 150 bordages in 1841, producing mainly cereals and hemp, and feeding horses and a few cattle on the meadows bordering the Rosay.
