Volnay is located near the confluence of the Arche and Hune streams, not far from the Via Turniacensis, the ancient road linking Le Mans to Orléans. However, the village appears to have developed from the Middle Ages onwards, in connection with the foundation of a priory dependent on the Couture abbey in the 11th century. The parish church dedicated to Saint-Vincent is the only evidence of this.
