This medieval castle is a former stronghold turned manor house. It marks the urban landscape in the center of Bouloire, massive and elegant at the same time.
Destroyed by the English in the early 15th century, it was only partially rebuilt. The façade on the town side, with its staircase tower and large windows, took on the appearance of a pleasure residence. However, the castle’s fortifications retain a defensive aspect. The Perche Sarthois region was defended by other castles, including Bonnétable, La Ferté-Bernard, Montfort-le-Gesnois, Saint-Calais and Montmirail.
In 1680, a fire destroyed the neighboring church, the village and part of the fortification, the last remains of which disappeared at the end of the 18th c. Today, all that remains, near the church rebuilt at the end of the 17th c., is the 15th-century dwelling bought by the commune in 1854 and restored in the late 1990s.
